WCW Week of August 14, 2000 - New Blood Rising Fallout
Nitro
No opening video and pyro as we go immediately to the ring, where Russo has a mic and standing beside him is Tank. Russo calls this deja vu all over again, reminding us how he stood in that ring a month ago and made history, he made an example out of someone, we know who it is because that piece of shit hasn't been around since. Of course he means Hogan but he's not allowed to mention him by name thanks to that lawsuit. Tonight he says he's going to make an example on live TV out of another piece of shit in Goldberg. Russo has taken offense to Goldberg screwing with him, and says he came to the show to fire him tonight on national TV, but Brad Siegel wouldn't let him because the fans love him. He says screw the fans and Goldberg, and since he couldn't fire him, he's going to have Goldberg's ass kicked instead by Tank. Russo reminds us of what happened at the Philips Arena... I don't know what he's talking about, but Russo says that was horseshit, and Russo tells Goldberg to come out and call it in the ring with Tank. He calls the fans asswipes and says that Goldberg believes that if their world were real, then he could take everybody, kick everyone's ass, and while Goldberg thinks he's Superman, Russo's got the kryptonite in Tank to stick up his ass tonight. It sounds like someone is trying to get commentary to speak over there headsets but Schiavone is heard basically saying he doesn't know what to do with this bullshit. Russo tells them to go to break as they wait for Goldberg. This only went 4 and a half minutes so far and it felt like an hour.
Commentary are still speechless and Schiavone finally welcomes us to the show, which is live from the Skyreach Place in Kelowna, BC up north, and Russo comes over to swipe Hudson's headset. He screams into it at someone named Keith to show "it" and threatens to beat his hick ass.
So we see Tank and Goldberg fighting in the aisle and there's a referee, I'm not sure if this is a match or not. Goldberg still has his ribs taped and nails a kick right to Tank's face after getting whipped into the guard rail. Tank spine first into the ring apron, then into the guard rail. Russo is bleeped a bunch and Goldberg delivers a clothesline. He tries to get to Russo and Goldberg throws over the announce table as Russo hides behind commentary. Goldberg has Tank in an armbar and Russo gets in his face, Goldberg scares him off. Russo yells "that's it" and it goes to commercial again. From the last commercial this thing was only 2 minutes, what the fuck is this show?
We learn from commentary that Russo forced Cat to book a match between Nash and Steiner to redo their contender's match the night before and they explain how Goldberg went against the script. He's also given Jarrett a rematch against Booker in his last chance to get the World Title back.
The Franchise & Reno (w/ Torrie Wilson) vs Billy Kidman & Big Vito
Pre-Match: Douglas and Torrie are out first. He says that Billy may have won the battle the night before, but the war is far from over. He vows to strip away more of Kidman's hide tonight like he did with the strap. He says Torrie deserves so much more than what Kidman has to offer and makes some joke about him and Torrie not being satisfied before bringing out Reno.
Vito and Kidman get the upperhand to start with a pair of back elbows. Fighting on the outside as Vito goes for Douglas, and Kidman after Reno. Reno into the guard rail as Vito and Douglas take it to the ring. Douglas and Reno take the advantage, Douglas catches him with a powerslam coming off the ropes. Kidman chases after Torrie as Douglas mounts with rights in the corner on Vito, then he fights back but Reno joins in to double team. Vito sent off the ropes, kicks and rights as Kidman goes up top with a crossbody taking down Reno and Douglas. Kidman with rights, dropkicks. Douglas counters a whip and Vito is whipped towards Reno, who's whipped by Kidman, Vito goes for his DDT but gets a clothesline by Douglas. Kidman goes for the Kid Crusher (Unprettier) on Reno but Douglas gets him with a right. Reno Rolls the Dice on Kidman and covers but Vito breaks it up. Vito with a Cactus Clothesline to Douglas. Reno goes for a scoop slam to Kidman who counters with a Baldo Bomb, then goes up top but he's crotched by Douglas. Vito goes up top with a frog splash to Reno for the win in 3:19. I guess this was a tornado tag match? It wasn't bad, but they were clearly rushing to get as much shit in as possible.
Douglas nails Vito from behind and Douglas gets cuffs from Torrie, tries to cuff Kidman in the corner but he's nailed from behind by Vito, now Douglas is cuffed. Vito and Kidman lay into him, then Reno is sent off the ropes into an atomic drop, then Kid Crusher from Kidman. Now Perfect Event run down with Jindrak and O'Haire to attack Kidman and Vito. Torrie is desperately trying to free Douglas. Douglas is finally freed by Doug Dillinger and he leaves with Torrie, as Event's music hits and Reno leaves with them.
Filthy Animals are in Cat's office with some tape of a VH1 show, apparently Disco was on it and wants Cat to show a clip tonight and Cat just tosses the tape away. Animals want to continue their business relationship, Cat likes what they've been doing and apparently they've gotten Cat an assistant, someone named Mrs. Jones. She says she can do anything for him and whispers something in his ear, Animals leave.
David is walking backstage in his mud-stained suit, head hung and muttering to himself and up walks Guns to ask how Stacey is doing. David just kinda stares at her and leaves without saying a word. Then commercial.
Out comes David and we see stills of the ROTC Match. David is talking over these stills and Schiavone's talking over him, I think he's recapping what happened at the PPV. Madden puts it best when he calls this incoherent and the gist is he doesn't know what's going on and commentary are still talking like this is a shoot. Guns is watching backstage breaking down and MIA don't care. She goes out to seemingly console David.
Out comes Guns as David continues to babble barely audibly. Guns apologizes and cries about what happened in the match. David goes nuts thinking Guns did something to her. Now out runs Stacey and David is completely oblivious until Stacey announces she's pregnant and brings David out of his trance. David starts doing the Ric strut and gets all excited and they kiss into commercial.
More celebrating in the back.
Out comes Storm as we go to stills of the overbooked mess of a match with Awesome the night before. Lance wants to be serious a minute and says it's good to be home, getting to wrestle for true wrestling fans. He says tonight is their night, their chance to show what hard work, integrity and pride is all about, because Americans don't have a clue. He says they can wave the red, white and blue if they want to, but he just keeps making them tap out to the Maple Leaf. He wants to show the world what real national pride is all about as he calls for the anthem.
It almost plays in full but it's interrupted by Cat with a mic. Cat is still having more face and heel turns than Big Show as he calls the fans stupid and says this isn't a hockey game, when they won't shut up and let him talk and tells them to kiss his American black ass. He sees a bunch of fat women, ugly ass Canadian kids, and calls Storm an ugly ass Power Ranger. Fans start a "kick his ass" chant and Cat threatens to kicks every Canadian ass and says Storm got lucky and used his IHOP Canadian handbook to help him win. He says Awesome's getting a rematch tonight and if Storm pulls out the rulebook Cat's going to stick it up his ass, and Cat will be the guest referee.
WCW Canadian Heavyweight Championship: Lance Storm (c) vs Mike Awesome
The Cat as guest referee.
Storm immediately on the attack, then Awesome with rights, Storm sent off the ropes and hits a standing side kick, then a dropkick, covers and Cat makes his sweet time going for the count, so Awesome kicks out before one. Awesome sent into the corner and gets a boot up, then a clothesline. Scoop slam by Awesome and a splash off the ropes, covers and a fast count for two.
Storm sent out to the floor and into the guard rail, then a chair across his back. Back in the ring, Awesome with a slingshot splash to the back, cover, fast count and two. Storm thumbs the eye and hits a dropkick, then Awesome face first in the corner, sent across the ring and Storm with a clothesline, then a bridging Northern Lights, slow count for one. Storm gets a German suplex from Awesome after reversing an Irish whip, then hits the Awesome Bomb, Cat starts to count but he's attacked by Rougeau and Cat is tossed out to the floor.
Awesome sets his sights on Rougeau who pulls out the rule book. Awesome goes for the Awesome Bomb but he's cut off by PCO who delivers a spinebuster. PCO goes up top for... what I can tell is called the Tower of Quebec, their old finisher as the Quebecers, an assisted senton bomb. Storm puts on the Maple Leaf, Cat comes back in and kicks both Rougeau and PCO and Awesome has passed out. In comes Elix Skipper to attack Cat and hit the Overdrive. Elix grabs Awesome's arm and makes him tap out, Rougeau calls for the bell and Storm retains in 4:24. I mean this was more overbooked BS but the crowd ate up and popped for every second of it, so whatever.
The Canadians... or Canadians and Elix?... stand tall and leave. Ms. Jones helps Cat to the back into commercial.
Pamela is backstage with Lance and his new friends and she wonders if he's forming a Canadian army of sorts. Storm says if they US wants a war that's what they're gonna get. He introduces us to Team Canada, Canadian born and Canadian in their hearts, and says it's time to spread the wealth. To PCO, the most hardcore man he knows, Storm hands the SHIT over to. To Elix, the 100kg and Under Championship.
Cat comes up with a baseball bat to defend himself and wants the new champions to put their titles on the line tonight. then leaves after taking a swing.
WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Jeff Jarrett vs Booker T (c)
Some quick back and forth to start until Booker delivers a dropkick and takes the advantage. Booker sent off the ropes, blocks a hip toss and hits a clothesline. Jarrett sent off the ropes, ducks a spin kick but caught with a sleeper, escaping with a low blow. Jarrett with a kick to the ribs, stomping away, then Booker off the ropes, ducks an elbow, counters a knee with a roll up for two. Jarrett with a clothesline and a cover for two. Booker with rights into the corner, Jarrett sent into the corner, gets a boot up and goes up top and hits a crossbody, but Booker rolls through into a cover for two, then caught with a dropkick and sent to the outside.
Booker sent into the guard rail before returning to the ring, Jarrett covers for two. Jarrett with a rear chinlock, starts to fight out but he's sent back down and Jarrett reapplies the hold. Jarrett switches into a surfboard. Booker fights up to his feet, sent off the ropes and hits a spinning back elbow. Booker with clotheslines, Jarrett sent into the corner, catches Booker with an elbow, tries to use his guitar but he's caught. Booker goes for the Book End and Jarrett gets out with a knee. Jarrett sent off the ropes into a Harlem Side Kick.
Booker gets the guitar now and swings, but Jarrett pulls the referee over and he gets nailed instead. Jarrett caught with a spinebuster, Booker with a jackknife cover, another referee already runs down to make the count but it only gets two. Booker counters an Irish whip to set up and deliver the scissor kick, then a spinaroonie. Jarrett ducks a Side Kick and Booker's knee buckles, Jarrett hits the Stroke, makes the cover but Goldberg pulls Jarrett out of the ring. Referee calls for the DQ, so Jarrett wins and Booker retains in 6:49. These two never have a bad match.
Jarrett is sent into and over the guard rail. Goldberg gets a mic and calls out to Russo, and just says that's one down and there's two to go, and tells him to watch his ass because he's next. Then commercial.
Replays of what just happened.
Pamela is with Steiner and Midajah backstage and she starts talking. Steiner puts his finger in her mouth and says she doesn't need to talk, she's so beautiful and can just stand there. He says that he saw something in Goldberg that he knew was there all along at the PPV, that being fear. He says when he was beating Goldberg's bald, punk ass up his tail went between his legs and he ran like a little bitch. As far as Nash goes, he talks about his massive triceps and how it allows him to jam his fist down Nash's throat, grab his vocal chords, and shove them straight up his ass, and give new meaning to the phrase "talking shit." Then he leaves.
WCW SHIT: Carl "The Rave" Oulette (c) vs Screamin' Norman Smiley
Carl drives Norman into the corner with rights and boots, then whipped across the ring, Carl connects with a clothesline and Norman rolls out. Carl sent into the guard rail and hits another clothesline off the rebound. Carl pulls out a table and slides it into the ring, along with some brooms and sticks and a trash lid. Norman gets a trash can but it gets baseball slid back into him, then Carl with a cannonball over the ropes onto Norman. Carl with a trash can to the head of Norman and they return to the ring.
Norman with a low blow using a mop handle, then Carl sent off the ropes and nails Norman with a trash can lid. Carl sets up the table in the corner, then some rights to Norman. Norman choked over the middle rope, then Carl off the ropes and drops over the neck of Norman. Boots in the corner by Carl and a headbutt, then tries to whip him into the table but Norman counters with a clothesline, then a swinging scoop slam. Norman with the Big Wiggle, only to be clocked, then Carl sent off the ropes, catches Norman with a low blow headbutt.
Carl repositions the table on the mat near the corner and delivers a sitout spinebuster. Carl sets Norman down on the table before going up top, Norman grabs hold of the ref to pull himself up as Carl goes for the senton and crashes through the table, falls on top of Carl to win the title in 5:56. I actually liked this match. Though I question giving the title to Norman.
Since Norman wants to be done with hardcore he tries to refuse the title.
Cat is talking to Ms. Jones backstage but you can barely hear him, something about getting someone to kick "his" ass. Then they leave. Camera pans to a nearby room where Kwee-Wee is doing some ironing with Papaya into commercial.
Pamela is backstage with Nash, reminding us that he's putting his title shot on the line against Steiner by order of Russo. Nash says Russo should get drug tested because he doesn't understand his thinking, after Nash won last night and now he has to put up his title shot in a match with Steiner. Apparently he talked to Russo who said he deemed that Nash had to give Steiner a second chance, which he uses to bring up Hall who's been wanting a second chance and assumes the brass hasn't deemed that he deserves a second chance, so until Hall gets one, Steiner ain't getting one. He challenges Booker to a match instead, saying that's the only way we'll see him in the ring tonight. Then he leaves.
Filthy Animals are already in the ring to do their usual shit, and there's a reference to Richard Gere and gerbils in reference to Kronic, who then make their way out, as we go to stills of what happened between them and the Dark Carnival. Kronic join commentary for this next match. While Carnival make their entrance, Harris Brothers blindside Kronic in the dark and a fight breaks out.
WCW World Tag Team Championship: Juventud Guerrera & Rey Mysterio Jr. (w/ Konnan, Disco Inferno & Tygress) vs The Dark Carnival (c)
So we hear action going on in the ring and the bell is sounded, but the camera stays focused on Kronic and the Harrises for a good 15 seconds before we return focus to the ring. Vamp and Muta have Rey cornered, then Muta with a sidewalk slam on Rey and now Konnan's on commentary. Snapmare and an elbow to Rey from Muta, then a shot to the leg, Muta going for the knee now. Vamp tags in and goes for the knee too, then Rey sent into the corner, tries to go up and over, caught but sends Vamp face first into the corner. Muta back in with a suplex to Rey. Vamp with a running powerbomb, then slides Rey out to the floor. Muta with a chair tot he ribs of Rey. Rey is whipped into the guard rail before returning to the ring. Muta back in, Rey sent off the ropes, through the legs, ducks a side kick by Vamp who nails Muta and Rey hits a facebuster on Vamp.
Juvie gets the tag, popped up by Vamp and hits Muta with a dropkick, spin kick to Vamp, springboard dropkick to Muta, wheelbarrow facebuster to Vamp, roll up on Muta but Vamp breaks it up. Vamp sent off the ropes, Muta mists Juvie and Nail in the Coffin to Rey. Dragon screw by Muta to Juvie. Sting's lighting and music goes off who comes out with a bat to attack Dark Carnival, then leaves. Rey covers Muta and Animals win the titles in 6:15. This match was just a mess.
Animals celebrate into commercial.
Dark Carnival (including Demon) barge into Cat's office. Demon demands a Four Corners Match with the three of them and Sting, and Cat gives it to them.
WCW 100kg and Under Championship: "Primetime" Elix Skipper (c) vs Kwee-Wee (w/ Papaya)
Elix attacks from behind and gets Kwee-Wee with an arm wringer, who gets one of his own on Elix. Kicks by Elix and an arm-trap suplex, then covers for two. Roll up by Elix for two. T-bone and a cover for two by Elix. Kwee-Wee sent chest first into the corner, counters a scoop slam with a back suplex. Boots by Kwee-Wee, then a suplex into the top turnbuckle drops Elix into a tree of woe. Kwee-Wee with rapid rights and lefts, then a cover for two.
Elix is tossed out to the floor and Kwee-Wee spends some time with Papaya as she hops on the apron. Elix with a handstand on the top rope tries for a headscissor but he's sent back out to the apron, then Kwee-Wee tries to spear him through the ropes but Elix somersaults over him and Kwee-Wee goes out to the floor. Elix with a corkscrew onto Kwee-Wee to the floor before returning to the ring, then Elix covers for two.
Kwee-Wee off the ropes, Elix bridges to avoid a crossbody, then a bridging full nelson suplex for two. Elix sent into the corner, back elbow and a crossbody from the middle rope into a cover for two. Missile dropkick by Elix from the top and lands on his feet. Kwee-Wee sent into the corner, then across the ring, Elix misses a splash, then Kwee-Wee goes for a stalling suplex but it's countered with a DDT. Elix pulls out some ring, clocks Kwee-Wee with it but he no sells it, then Kwee-Wee with a Blue Thunder Bomb but it only gets two.
Papaya tends to Kwee-Wee who nails Elix with a clothesline, covers for two. Elix with boots and rights, then covers for three in 6:06. So... is ring worked then, but not earlier when he clocked Kwee-Wee? Sure, alright. It was a fun match before the inconsistent finish.
Elix celebrates as Papaya checks on Kwee-Wee. Kwee-Wee decks the ref and stomps away as he loses it, tossing the ref out to the floor and his music hits.
Sting is walking backstage and Goldberg is nearby into commercial.
Four Corners Match: Sting vs The Demon vs Vampiro vs The Great Muta
Pre-Match: During entrances, Madden challenges Okerlund to a match.
Sting jumps Demon, sends him off the ropes into a clothesline. Inverted atomic drop to Demon. Vamp and Muta double team Sting and Vamp talks down to Demon before continuing the attack. Low blow to Sting by Vamp. Sting driven into the corner for more double teaming. Roundhouse by Vamp, Stin'g back up to lay out Muta and Vamp. Muta into the corner for a Stinger Splash, then Sting gets Muta in the Deathlock. Vamp grabs a kendo stick and goes to nail Sting, then Demon stops him wanting to nail Sting, but nails Vamp instead. Ref calls for the bell and declares Sting the winner, so I guess Muta tapped, but we can't see it because of the camera angle in 2:07.
Sting and Demon stare down and Demon leaves. Vamp attacks Demon with a kendo stick and toss him back in. Then attacks Sting as he tries to help and Muta joins in on the attack. Sting is tossed out to the floor and Vamp and Muta drag him to the back into commercial.
They've laid Sting on a table in the back and there's just some guy sleeping in the corner. Muta has a pair of scissors and he goes to use them on Sting until Demon makes the save with a bat. Demon carries Sting out.
Out comes Nash for... maybe a match? He's carrying some king of square package with him. There's a ref in the ring. Nash gets a mic and gets a cheap pop and says Big Sexy's in the house. He can't help but notice a lot of Scott Hall signs in the crowd, there's a "we want Scott" chant and he says no one wants him more than Nash himself, but WCW has decided he's too dangerous for live TV. He says everyone always asks what Hall is up to, so since he can't bring out the real deal, he thought he'd conduct an interview with Scott, so he pulls out a cardboard cutout of Scott Hall wearing an NWO shirt.
Nash asks "Scott" is there's anything he wants to say, and audio is piped in for a "Hey yo". Nash knows Scott hasn't been around for a while, but mentions how NWO died a little while ago for the third time. Nash wants to conduct a little survey, asks the fans if they want to see Hall back, and if they want to see the people keeping Hall away to kiss Nash's ass. They cheer both. Nash says live TV is beautiful. Then he calls out Booker.
Well Booker obliges with less than 2 minutes left in this show, and Steiner nails him from behind with a pipe, then some more shots and one for Nash. Goldberg is heard and he's up on the NitroVision to address Steiner. He's got Midajah hostage and he's seen getting her up for a Jackhammer, but the camera feed cuts out before he delivers it, and Steiner runs to the back. Nash and the ref are checking on Booker and Midajahs been put through the table as Steiner goes in search of Goldberg, and that's the end of the show.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
And we're back to typical Russo bullshit. We had a month worth of good, or at least better shows, and now it's matches with a bunch of bullshit, and storylines that make no sense, and we're still doing this Scott Hall thing despite the fact his contract was ripped up, none of this makes any damn sense. That's not to say there wasn't some good on this show, but most of it was ruined by the bullshit. Sigh. With a run time of 1:29:29, there was a total 34:56 of wrestling.
Thunder
Opening package recaps some of Nitro.
Nash is just arriving as we see him backstage and up walks Rick Steiner who has a problem with Nash being #1 contender, saying Scott should be. So Nash suggest the two of them have a match tonight for his #1 contendership. Rick rightfully asks who Nash is to be able to make matches and Nash's argument is he's #1 contender so he can just do that. Sure why not.
There's a police escort for Team Canada but Cat's already here to ruin their night, putting them in a match with MIA for tonight. Then they all head inside.
Broadcasting from the Riverside Coliseum in Kamloops, BC still up north for this episode of Thunder. Schiavone welcomes us to the show joined by Tenay and Stevie Ray before Kronic make their way out. We see still of what happened to them at the PPV, plus the fight with the Harrises on Nitro. Adams gets a mic and says they've been in the country four days now, and BC is definitely down with Kronic. He says that no one blames the Harrises for starting an issue with the hottest team in pro wrestling, but when you jump on top of a mountain and fall off it's a long ways down. He says that management has flown in four wrestlers to give them an attitude check tonight, and not only will they beat all four of those punks, he guarantees they'll beat them in less than two minutes, and he calls it the Kronic Two Minute Warning. He says that some may think they're being cocky but they're just that damn good. Clark takes the mic and says the two of them are all about two things, breaking necks and cashing checks, and they're going to show us why it's all about Kronic.
Kronic Two Minute Warning: Kronic vs Juggernaut, Ladies Choice, Michelle Starr & Rockford 2000
I don't even know if these names are accurate, these are just from a wiki page for this episode, and commentary have no idea who they are. There's also an on-screen two minute countdown. It's hard to recap this when there's four guys who have no names, but it's a squash match. It ends after High Time on one of them, then they make two piles for a double pin for the win in 1:43.
Kronic clears the ring of the jobbers and the Harrises appear on the ThunderTron(?) somewhere outdoors. One of them says they were the big boys in WCW before Kronic barged in, and the other one says Kronic is dead as far as they're concerned. The first one tells them to watch their back because they pick the time and place for the H Bomb. The second one says they're going to smoke Kronic before they hop on their bikes and drive off.
We go to commentary to tell us what's in store tonight, with the two matches made earlier, as well as Filthy Animals defending the tag titles a sitdown interview Tony did with Jarrett, and Okerlund vs Madden in what's being called (apparently) the "match of the millennium.
We get a splitscreen of Okerlund and Madden getting ready backstage, Okerlund with a Blazers jersey, and Madden with... I can't tell what jersey it is, this match still to come.
Backstage, Mike Sanders is talking with the Animals and says he can help deal with Event, Palumbo and Stasiak since he went to the Power Plant with them, Sanders just wants a place to fit in. Disco is trying to warm the others up to him but they're having none of it.
Vamp is in the locker room with an ax and he takes down a hand dryer and a stall door in his anger. Muta is... I don't know what he's doing to be honest. Vamp calls Demon a piece of shit and says they need to destroy him, and they both leave.
Out comes David with a mic, in a lot better mood than he was on Nitro, and ask Stacey to come out. She comes out all smiles. David is smitten and gets down on a knee to propose. But they're interrupted by MIA for some reason. For reasons unknown AWOL attacks David while the rest hold back Stacey and then leave. Stacey gets upset and yells that he can't even propose properly, so she takes the ring out herself, puts the ring on and leaves. Sigh.
After commercial, Pamela is backstage with MIA and I guess they attacked because David put his hands on Guns on Nitro, but now they have to turn their attention to Canada, and unless they stop Lance and his crew they'll continue to reproduce like Gremlins after midnight and contaminate WCW. He says this is a war they can't afford to lose, and tells AWOL and Cajun to get their stuff, that they're leaving the country once the match is over. He says that Lance's days as so-called Canadian Champion are numbered and tells him to lock up before they leave.
Crowbar finds Daffney backstage to make sure she's alright, given everything going on with David, assures her that he's there for her if she's upset. Daffney is over David though, and besides she's got candy from her admirer. Crowbar didn't send them though it seems.
WCW World Tag Team Championship: Juventud Guerrera & Rey Mysterio Jr. (c) (w/ Disco Inferno & "Above Average" Mike Sanders) vs Mark Jindrak & Sean O'Haire
Konnan and Tygress on commentary.
Match starts in the middle of some replays from Nitro and last week's Thunder as Jindrak is getting double teamed, sent off the ropes, catches himself and sends Juvie out to the apron, only to be dropkicked in the knee by Rey. Juvie with a springboard dropkick. Rey stomps away then Juvie stomps before mounting with rights in the corner, then gets whipped in the corner, gets a boot up, tries to slide through the legs but gets caught and shoved into the corner.
O'Haire tags in, double hip toss all the way across the ring to Juvie and Rey tags in. Rights to Sean, only to be sent off the ropes, caught with a tilt-a-whirl into a gutwrench powerbomb attempt but fights out of it, landing on top of Sean. Rey off the ropes and caught with a powerslam. Rey sent off the ropes into a right hand, then a scoop throw into the corner. Jindrak back in, Rey sent off the ropes into a clothesline. Sean back in, inadvertently clocks Jindrak and gets caught with a spinning heel kick.
Juvie gets the tag, off Rey's back into Sean, then knocks Jindrak down. Juvie with a springboard dropick, covers but Jindrak breaks it up. Juvie sent off the ropes, Jindrak goes for a hip toss but Juvie blocks, off the ropes with a wheelbarrow bulldog, then a springboard leg drop by Rey, covers but Sean breaks it up. Rey sent off the ropes into a tilt-a-whirl sidewalk slam from Jindrak into a cover and Juvie breaks it up.
Tygress has left commentary as Juvie tries for a monkey flip on O'Haire, only to send him out to the floor. Rey goes for some kind of springboard move on Jindrak but it gets botched. Sitout powerbomb by Jindrak, then the Seanton Bomb, then Animals try to interfere and Sanders attacks Animals with pepper spray. Then Reno's appeared out of nowhere along with Palumbo and the ref calls for the bell in 4:46. I don't know who wins this one, but Animals retain either way. This was an alright match until the finish became an overbooked mess.
So Perfect Event, Sanders, Jindrak, O'Haire and Reno attack everyone in sight and they stand tall. Then commercial.
Okerlund finds Norman backstage, he wants some advice from the Hardcore Champion because his match with Madden will be a Street Fight apparently. Norman voices his displeasure in being in the Hardcore division, but will still give Gene pointers to beat that big windbag Madden. Okerlund takes shots at Madden's announcing, says he couldn't sell a sick person a bean sandwich, then considers doing a piledriver and a Frankensteiner and they walk off.
Cut to 3 Count in the locker room rehearsing a song and in walks Tank, and though they like the new song, Tank thinks it sucks. He says he's perfect on it but the backup sounds like sick cats, and they need to get back to the States and the record studio as soon as possible to fix it since they're debuting it on Nitro. 3 Count ask about their contract and gold record but Tank tells them not to worry, assures them that both are safe and taken care of. Shane says they're supposed to perform tonight but Tank insists they get their stuff, so they do and they all leave.
The Demon vs The Great Muta
Muta attacks right away and drives Demon into the corner for shoulders to the midsection, then some elbows to the back and more boots. Demon sent across the ring, gets a boot up and hits a clothesline. Muta sent off the ropes into a spinning back elbow then a running dropkick. Snapmare and a kick to the back by Demon, then a suplex and a cover for two.
Muta rakes the eyes and a snapmare, followed by an elbow. Muta torquing the knee before applying a single leg crab. Out comes Vamp with a kendo stick as Demon grabs the bottom rope for a break. Demon with boots and rights, Muta sent off the ropes into a knee lift. Demon gets distracted by Vamp after he rolls the kendo stick into the ring, Muta cracking Demon in the ribs as he turns back around. Commentary claims the ref didn't see this even though he clearly turned around after hearing the shot and saw Muta toss the stick out.
Muta just kinda stands there staring at Demon as he writhes on the mat holding his ribs for a while. Muta goes for the dragon screw but gets caught with an enziguri instead, then a pair of clotheslines. Double-underhook suplex by Demon, then goes for the Love Gun but gets misted instead. Muta with a backbreaker and a moonsault from the top for the win in 5:38. It was a match that happened.
Vamp is in immediately to attack with the kendo stick. Vamp gets a mic and puts the blame on Sting and says his death will come wicked, painful and slow at Vamp's hands, a real Juggalo. He says that he big plans for Sting at the PPV as their music hits, gets more shots in into commercial.
Cut to Rick in the locker room, someone's knocking on his door and he doesn't want to be bothered. He finally goes to answer it and whoever it was has disappeared. Um, OK.
Pamela is backstage with Madden, and I've figured out he's wearing a Steeler's jersey. She asks if he's trying to embarrass himself on national TV. He calls her Barbara Walters and basically calls her a shit interviewer who's only there for her looks. He says Okerlund didn't beat him last week, Buff hit the Blockbuster and Old Man River got the pin. He says there's no doubt what he's going to do to Okerlund, the only doubt being how he finishes the match, maybe flip flop and fly with a hurricanrana, or grind him out on the mat with a crossface (his words) and break his rickety old neck, or maybe just tape up his fist and punch him until he's lights out. He also says Gene's cup smelled like the perfume Pamela was wearing that night and she's appalled by this, then she walks off. He says he's going to kill her sugar daddy and she'll get a new one. Ugh.
Team Canada vs Misfits in Action (Gen. Rection, Cpl. Cajun & Lt. Loco)
Pre-Match: Fans start a "US sucks" chant and Lance couldn't agree more, but wants to be serious for a minute. He says it gives him great pleasure to introduce the greatest collection of pro athletes in sports today, Team Canada: the wrestling technician and Canadian Heavyweight Champion in himself, the most hardcore human buzzsaw in wrestling today in Carl, and the new WCW 100kg & Under Champion in Elix. He says that tonight they're taking over WCW, World Canadian Wrestling, and send the Misfits back to America red, white and black and blue. Then he calls for the playing of their anthem, and of course it's interrupted by MIA with Super Soakers.
Cajun and Elix start this off with some quick back and forth, Cajun gets the advantage with a suplex. Loco and Carl tag in and Carl hits a clothesline, then Loco sent off the ropes, through the legs, some exchanges and a headscissor by Loco. Loco sent off the ropes and kicked in the back by Lance, caught with a sitout spinebuster by Carl. Loco sent off the ropes into a clothesline. Elix back in to cover for two. Belly to belly by Elix, cover and Rection breaks it up. Loco sent off the ropes into a spinning back elbow, then Lance tags in. Loco sent off the ropes for a dropkick, Lance covers, Rection breaks it up. Lance goes for a powerbomb but Loco rolls through and floats over into a DDT.
Rection tags in, clotheslines to Elix and Carl, Lance off the ropes into a powerslam. Lance retreats to the corner, splashed by Rection, whipped across the ring and splashed again, then by Cajun, who floats over the ropes to the apron and is taken down off camera by Elix. Loco dives over the ropes onto Carl and Elix, then Lance is caught with a back suplex. Rection goes up top and hits the moonsault, covers but the ref is on the outside stopping Carl from using one of their titles. Rection goes back up top and Elix nails him with the other belt. Lance applies the Maple Leaf for the immediate tap out in 4:15.
Lance refuses to break the hold and out comes Cat with a chair. Lance breaks the hold before Cat can use it and Team Canada go to leave only to blindside Cat. MIA are back up to send the off into commercial.
Cat is still in the ring as we come back from break and he's sick of Lance and the Canadian fans and challenges Lance to a match. Lance wants him to put up his commissionership and he'll put up his title. Cat agrees as long as Elix and Carl leave.
WCW Canadian Heavyweight Championship: The Cat vs Lance Storm (c)
Cat's spot as WCW Commissioner also on the line. Elix Skipper and Carl Ouellette banned from ringside.
Cat with some kicks and a chop as he sends Lance off the ropes, then an elbow. Lance sent off the ropes and goes for a sunset flip but he's clocked by Cat, then completes the flip anyways for two. Standing side kick by Cat. Lance with a jawbreaker, then sends Cat face first into the corner. Cat sent off the ropes into a shoulder tackle. Lance is driven into the corner for mounter rights, then Lance counters with an inverted atomic drop, misses a clothesline and Cat hits a DDT. Lance sent into the corer and hit with a Feliner, Cat covers for... a slow count for some reason? Then Carl runs in to hit Cat with the Canadian flag for the DQ in 2:10. So Cat wins and keeps his commissionership, but Lance retains the title I guess.
Lance waves the flag and then he and Carl leave. Cat tells Storm that payback is hell and promises to get him on Nitro. Cat's music hits and he leaves the ring into commercial.
Still to come, the interview with Jarrett and the Street Fight, but right now Pamela is backstage with Rick ahead of his match with Nash. He starts rambling and then there's a commotion nearby and crew members interrupt. What the fuck was that about?
"Match of the Millennium" Kamloops Street Fight: Mark "The Best Looking Big Man on TV" Madden vs "Mean" Gene Okerlund
Pre-Match: Madden gets the mic and tells Okerlund he's in trouble tonight, with no Buff plus he's 102 years old. He says if he kills Okerlund there's not a coroner in the world that won't say it's natural causes, and tells him to get his petrified, fossilized ass out so he has some place to put his foot. Okerlund gets the mic once he's out and says it's a short evening so Madden can blow it out his ass. Then Okerlund calls for a pose down and has Madden pull off his jersey but there's another shirt on thankfully.... oh never mind he pulls up the shirt.
Okerlund clocks him... well I mean he sorta clocks him as best he can. Madden trips him up and starts choking him and the ref starts counting for some reason in a street fight. Norman runs down and he's attacked by PCO, sent into the guard rail and body blocked on the floor. Madden just keeps choking. Now Vito's out to send Carl off. Okerlund is finally up and Okerlund punches him, sorta covers and the ref counts even though Madden's shoulder is clearly up and he kicks out anyways. Madden with a headbutt, then positions Okerlund in the corner before going to the middle rope for what's dubbed as the Madden Bomb. Pamela runs out and rolls Gene out of the way then low blows Madden. Okerlund covers for the three in 2:51.
Okerlund and company celebrate and he gets a kiss from Pamela. We also get a replay of the low blow because... reasons. Then commercial.
Vito is talking with Cat backstage and he kinda rambles a bit, but the gist is he wants a favor from Cat, a match with PCO tonight and Cat gives it to him.
Time for the sitdown interview that Schiavone had with Jarrett, on a beach apparently. Tony claims this is the interview he's wanted to do most, which makes Jarrett chuckle. He says it's because Jarrett grew up in the business, with his grandmother being a promoter as well as his father and he's seen it change over the years, and he wants Jarrett's take on the state of the wrestling/sports entertainment business at this point. Jarrett says the business has always been ahead of the curve, it's always given society an outlet to go to. He says the business changed drastically 3 or 4 years back and thinks it's on the cusp of having to change again, though he's unsure what that direction will be but says they're in the middle of it. He talks about guys being put on TV 6 months after showing up at the Power Plant and says they'll never learn the business that way, to sit down and have a 30 minute PPV match, take the fans on a roller coaster ride and deliver, where the fans enjoy themselves.
Tony talks about the territory days and guys establishing their work rate before going to somewhere big, and asks Jarrett what they should do to develop talent. He says the fans will change that, that the guys who want it bad enough will make the most of their time, learn it in a shorter amount of time because they're bigger, stronger, faster athletes than 10 or 15 years ago. He thinks its easier now for a guy to get in the business and they don't respect it, don't realize what they have, take it for granted, and places the blame on the higher ups for that.
Tony brings up how Jarrett came back in October after being in WWF, leaving in the middle of their prosperity and asks if it was a good decision. Jarrett says it absolutely was and he hasn't looked back, he's given the answer a hundred times and says it's redundant at this point and it shouldn't be part of this interview. He also says he's moved forward without a doubt. Tony further asks if he's comfortable with the direction that WCW is going in. Jarrett says that only time will tell but at that point in time he sees things happening both on-air and in the front office, he says more guys are getting it, understanding that WCW is down right now, and it won't come overnight or easy, and everyone will have to get on the team and go in the right direction at the same time, and if not they'll still be spinning their wheels. He talks about how he's been through three different regimes since he's been back and how it's ridiculous, says you'll never be successful without a leader.
Tony brings up his match with Booker at New Blood Rising and calls it one of the greatest performances of the year, calls it match of the year and says Jarrett must be feeling good about it despite losing. Jarrett's flattered even though most probably wouldn't agree, even he doesn't agree it was the best match of even his career. He says he always wants to take it to another level and doesn't think he did that with that match but also doesn't think it was bad, He talks about how Booker's learned his craft and says they need more guys like him to be successful.
Tony brings up the reboot episode and how Russo established the New Blood, and New Blood Rising was the pinnacle of his efforts (ha!) and Jarrett was right there in the main event, and asks if he thinks Russo's efforts are moving in the right direction. Jarrett says they are and that it's a long time coming, and says Tony can't deny this should have happened months ago since he's been around like 10 years. He says one of the reasons he came to WCW was he was told the work rate would be brought up, not just in ring but across the board, and if things hadn't happened like they did behind the scenes it would have been a steady course. He finishes by saying things are in fact headed in the right direction before it goes to commercial. So, this was basically just a way to kiss more Russo ass.
Vito is walking backstage and he's stopped by Kidman and he thanks him for having his back on Nitro, assuring Vito he has his back too. He wants to know what his deal is with Reno and Vito says it's personal family business, then leaves.
Carl "the Rave" Ouellette vs Big Vito
Carl with a cheap kick to the gut, then Vito sent off the ropes into a clothesline. Carl stomping away, then Vito sent off the ropes again into a sort of t-bone suplex. Scoop slam by Carl before going to the middle rope and misses a leg drop. Carl sent off the ropes into an overhead toss, then a leg drop and a cover for two. Suplex by Vito before going up top to hit an elbow, then covers for two.
Vito sent off the ropes into a powerslam and a cover for two. Sidewalk slam by Carl before he goes up top and hits a splash, covers but it's a near fall. Carl sent off the ropes into a knee to the gut, then a back suplex by Vito, before going to the middle rope for a diving headbutt, covers for two. Carl with a Northern Lights and a cover for two. Chops are exchanged, then Carl sent off the ropes and caught with the impaler DDT and the clean win in 3:44. That... actually wasn't too bad. Also given that from what I've read this is Carl's last appearance, him losing makes sense here.
Reno runs down to attack from behind, Vito sent into the corenr but catches Reno with an elbow and a Mafia Kick. Reno is cornered for some chops, then Vito's sent off the ropes into an arm-trap suplex. Clothesline to Vito, then Roll the Dice. Reno goes out and grabs a chair and out runs Kidman to dropkick it into Reno's head. Reno is sent into the corner but gets Kidman with an elbow. Kidman sent into the corner but catches Reno with the Kid Crusher. Now out rush Perfect Event, Palumbo and Stasiak for some reason and Kidman takes them all out, and Sanders. He's caught with a right by Palumbo and it's 5 on 1. Out come Juvie and Rey to even things up and out comes Disco and Konnan too. For some reason the referee is just standing there while this is all going on as a big brawl breaks out. Eventually the Animals, Kidman and Vito are standing tall and the rest of Team Canada come out too. Oh never mind they all start fighting again and the ref is still just standing there. Now out runs Mike Awesome because of reasons. Then commercial.
Rick is backstage talking to Scott on the phone and he's attacked by Goldberg with a pipe. He picks up the phone and tells Scott he left a message with Rick, and asks how Midajah is before dropping it and gets one more shot in before leaving, then another commercial.
Rick is being loaded into an ambulance and Stevie Ray is there to ask for a status update, even though it's clear with only 8 minutes left in the show he won't be able to compete.
Over to Tenay and Tony to talk about everything that's been going on.
Cue Nash who was supposed to have a match and someone has a "Siegel Fears Hall" sign in the aisle, Nash made a point of showing it on camera. He takes the mic and starts by saying Hall couldn't make it tonight, because they were out kinda late, and though he could waste time calling out Goldberg but if he didn't want any of Nash at the PPV and sure as hell doesn't want any tonight. He says that nothing's going to stop him from becoming World Champion in a month, he didn't want to cheat his fans from getting their eyes on the next World Champion.
Speaking of World Champion, out comes Booker to introduce the people to the current champion. He says that everything Nash has said is nothing but a maybe, but they will give the people exactly what they want to see at the PPV. He says he respects Nash, says he's a big man with great ability, but as he's said before Nash will have to kill him before he takes the title.
Nash reminisces about when Harlem Heat and the Outsiders were selling out buildings around the country and world, and says he had nothing but respect for Booker, says he has all the talent in the world and he's not doing anything tonight but say he can't wait to meet Booker in Buffalo, and wishes him luck. They shake hands and raises arms, only for Nash to deck him with a clothesline. Booker sent off the ropes into a big boot and Nash knocks himself over in the process. Nash lays him out with a hell of a jackknife before posing with the title to end the show.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Well this is a show that mostly just... happened. There were only two good or decent matches, one was ruined by overbooked BS. Madden vs Okerlund was all the proof you need that Russo's an idiot. And the rest is usual WCW bullshit that we haven't seen a hundred times before. Also I guess Nash is a heel now? With a run time of 1:29:41, this show had a total 25:07 of wrestling.
