Week of December 18, 2000 - Starrcade Fallout
Nitro
Flair is backstage to welcome us to the show, plus puts over the PPV before talking about tonight. After Buff's interference in Goldberg and Luger's match, he makes Buff vs Goldberg. Plus, he'll reveal Steiner's opponent, or potentially opponents, for Sin.
Recap stills of Starrcade.
Live from the Richmond Coliseum in Virginia for this edition of Nitro, welcomed by Schiavone who's joined by Madden and Hudson, then right to the first match.
Shane Helms vs Shannon Moore
Winner gets a Cruiserweight Title shot at Sin.
Shannon gets the upperhand early, sending Shane to the floor with a headscissor. Then Shane with a drop toe hold and a roll up for two. Shannon with a roll up for two. Botched arm drag by Shannon, then backslide, both get two counts. Another rollup from Shannon for two. Victory roll from Shannon for two, then he's tossed out to the floor.
Shane pulled out to the floor and Shannon lures him back to the apron, Shannon botches a suicide dive before sending Shane face first off the apron, then a hurricanrana from the apron to the floor. Shannon and Shane trade tilt-a-whirls and Shane is sent into the corner chest first, then set on top. Shane fights him off and hits a powerslam from the middle rope, but it only gets two.
Shane with a fireman's facebuster, then an X-Plex for two. Shannon sent to the corner, avoids a superkick, sends Shane to the corner, sent to the corner and drags Shannon down by the hair. Corkscrew senton by Shannon gets two. Shane sent off the ropes, blocks a hip toss, sends Shannon off the ropes and he blocks a hop toss. Stepup leg drop gets Shannon a near fall. Shane set on the top rope, but he avoids a Frankensteiner, then flies off with a sunset flip with a near fall. Shane with the Vertebreaker for the win. (6:16) Good match despite the botches.
Chavo runs out but gets the Samoan drop/swinging neckbreaker combo for his trouble.
MIA looks on from the locker room and Rection emphasizes that Chavo is no good to Cajun. Cajun rolls his eyes which just pisses off Rection.
Commercial
Steiner and Midajah make their way out. He says Flair is taking his job too personal, because when he was champion they said he was average, but they say Steiner is the genetic freak, when Flair was champion he squeaked by victories, but he dominates and destroy, he's the real deal. He says Flair's finding out being CEO is harder than he thought, he can't find enough wrestlers who are brave enough to face him, so he has an idea: he suggests DDP get a sex change so he has the balls to face Steiner. He says Flair's been in the business a long time, has seen a lot of white trash and jabronis, Flair should do his job and send Page to the bush leagues where he belongs, he's proof you can take someone out of the trailer park, but they'll always be white trash. He gets on his knees and begs Flair to make Page his next opponent.
Out comes Flair. He congratulates Steiner for beating Sid and calls him the man, and that Steiner's taking the CEO thing too seriously. He says it's his job to make sure the franchise player in the wrestling world, that being Steiner, stay the man day in and day out. They've told everyone that anyone with the belt is the man, so he has to make life interesting for Steiner. Steiner's convinced Flair's just trying to screw him.
Flair's making a three-way dance for Sin, which pisses off Steiner. Tonight, he announces two matches, the winner of which will face off in the main event, and the winner of that will be one of Steiner's challengers. Just to make sure Steiner isn't running around causing chaos again, he's not telling Steiner who they are, he'll have to watch the show. He's also hired a "mystery player" and he's not going to tell anyone who it is, but he'll be there tonight. This guy told Flair he wants Steiner. Steiner says the last time Flair pisses him off he visited Arn in the hospital, and he's pissed him off again now. Steiner vows to find out who the mystery man is, and if not he'll find Flair. I can't wrap my head around that first bit, like why the hell was Steiner suddenly going after DDP? Apparently it was completely unscripted (big shock) and led to a fight backstage so... Interesting plans for Sin though.
Commercial
Okerlund is backstage with Bagwell and Luger, with Buff holding a copy of Goldberg's book. Buff says the company's ran him in the ground for nine years and he's finally sick of it, and what better way to start things than go to Luger and form a tag team, Totally Buff. Luger says things have only just begun and they have plenty of surprises in store for him tonight. Steiner comes up and tells him to find out who the mystery guy is. Buff and Luger leave.
Meng comes out to the ring with Paisley and Kwee-Wee, for what we're told is a Hardcore Title Match. Funk appears on the NitroVision with his face pressed to chain linkto call out the "monkey-faced moron" to a Hardcore Match, with his flat feet and banana nose, to meet him inside a cage.
WCW Hardcore Championship: Meng vs Terry Funk (c)
So Meng runs to the back and through some hallways, eventually finds Funk by a chain link wall. Meng sent into the link and a trash can to his head. Can to Funk's head. Funk gets cuffed then a can to his head. Funk tries to beg him off and mentions his grandkid and gets nailed in the head with a lid instead, then thrown into some bin. Funk face first off another can, which he throws up in the air and lands on his own head. Meng with the can to his head as they stumble around back to the arena.
Trash can to the back of Funk, then the head, then the head again and again. Funk into the guard rail in the aisle now, then the can to the back of his head. Funk face first off the apron and into the ring. Meng pulls out a table and slides it into the ring, then nailed in the head again with the can. Meng sets up the table, gets nailed twice in the head with the can and no sells. Funk nails himself repeatedly in the head with the can, then Meng nails him with it, laying him on it. Funk is bleeding now. Meng goes up top but misses a splash, and no-sells it anyways. Tongan Death Grip by Meng and out runs Crowbar. He nails Meng with his golden wrench allowing Funk to fall on top and retain. (5:09) This match was so fucking confusing.
Crowbar has ditched the 70s stuff and grabs a mic. He says what he did wasn't out of loyalty or compassion, it was just an insurance policy, to make sure Funk is at 100% for Sin. He says he wasn't at his best at Starrcade, he was walking around like a jackass, says every time Funk swung that chair, reared back, every time it bounced off his skull, Funk knocked more sense into him. He wants a rematch for Sin if Funk has the guts. See now that was good..

Steiner confronts Jarrett backstage desperate to find out who this mystery person is.
Okerlund is elsewhere with Vito. Vito says Reno let him down, let their parents down. He says he has family values, he's gonna stick up for them and himself, and the Thrillers will pay the price. He says when it's over he'll have the last word.
Crowbar is elsewhere with Daffney and they bump into Awesome, who wonders what happened to Crowbar's 70s stuff. Crowbar says it almost killed his career and made him lose his edge, but Daffney helped him get it back. He tells Awesome to find his.

Pre-Match: The first of two matches to determine one of Steiner's challengers. Storm wants to be serious for a minute. He says he's held every singles title but one, and tonight he earns his shot at the World Title, and since this isn't an election, even stupid Americans can screw it up for him. Then he calls for everyone to rise for the anthem. Rey sporting rib tape.
Match starts in the middle of showing stills from the Bunkhouse Street Brawl at the PPV, come back to Rey sent off the ropes and delivers a headscissor, then a drop toe hold and La Magistral for two. Storm with a gorilla press but Rey counters with a sunset flip for two. Dropkick by Rey sets up the Bronco Buster, but Storm gets the knees up on a moonsault followed by a superkick for two. Backbreaker by Storm for two. Stalling suplex by Storm for two.
Rey rolls out to the floor holding his ribs before whipping Storm into the guard rail, only to eat a boot to the face. Back in the ring, gutbuster by Storm for two. Rey sent off the ropes, ducks a pair of clotheslines, hits a crossbody for two, then a running clothesline for another two count. Storm comes back with a jawbreaker. Rey caught in an ab stretch, attacking the ribs with forearms, but Rey manages to get out with a hip toss, then misses a springboard splash, Storm covering for two.
Rey sent to the corner for rights and knees to the ribs, before he's sent across the ring, gets a boot up, floats over into a headscissor sending Storm to the floor, then a somersault takes Storm out. Back to the ring, Rey connects with the springboard leg drop to the back of the head for a near fall. Rey sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline, springboards into a wheelbarrow, but thrown down into the Maple Leaf for the win. (5:30) Another good match here.
Commercial
Pre-Match: Awesome gets a mic and says the love doctor is in and there's enough Vitamin A to go around. After the way he beat Bigelow at the PPV though, he feels a little change coming on, and there's a little bit of Career Killer aching to come out of him. He says the Awesome is off and running toward the WCW Title. So this pretty much guarantees Jarrett going to the PPV right?
Awesome sent off the ropes off a side headlock, ducking a series of elbows to hit a shoulder block for two. Jarrett rakes the eyes and sends him face first in the corner, followed by some rights. Boots from Jarrett and then sent across the ring, tries to float over but caught with a German. Awesome elevated over to the apron before Jarrett snaps his throat over the top rope and to the floor.
Awesome face first off a chair, then Jarrett sent into the guard rail before getting scoop slammed to the floor. Jarrett ping ponged between the apron and guard rail before going face first off the announce table, mounting with rights, then an elbow drop. Jarrett gets him with a low blow before returning to the ring, Jarrett off the middle rope with a club to the back of the head. Awesome sent off the ropes into a dropkick gets two.
Awesome sent off the ropes but catches Jarrett with a sitout powerbomb for two. Flying clothesline from the top by Awesome, then a double-underhook facebuster gets a two. Awesome Bomb avoided by Jarrett as he retreats to the corner, gets the boots up on a running splash sending Awesome staggering backwards into the referee. Jarrett gets the guitar but Awesome delivers a back suplex. Awesome tries to use the guitar but the referee takes it away from him. Meanwhile Jarrett retreats to the floor to grab a guitar from under the ring to hit Awesome for the win. (5:29) Actually a fairly good match, but I'm already sick of Jarrett again.
Commercial
Steiner's about ready to kill Jarrett for lying to him. Jarrett says he had to lie or Flair would have taken him out, and he needed to get in the title match to protect Steiner's ass, says he's the only one who has Steiner's back.
Hype video for Glacier's return. This time though, Norman is watching on the monitor in the locker room, who's all excited for "a real hero".
Okerlund is backstage with Franchise. He says you have to lose a battle sometimes to win the war, and while Rection is still recognized as US Champion he'll eventually lose the war, and though he'd like to kick his ass tonight, he suggest they wait until Thunder. He tells Rection to bring his ragtag group that's bursting at the seams and he'll bring the team he's put together. In walk Kronik. Clark says that when they get paid someone will get hurt. Adams says they'll find out the hard way that breaking necks and cashing cheques isn't just their motto, it'll be their reality.
Commercial
Flair is on the phone telling someone to not let his mystery man get to the building, he wants it under wraps and says it'll be a big surprise.
Awesome is losing it backstage just about breaking a table with a chair. Filthy Animals try to calm him down but he's not having it.
No Nitro for Christmas or New Year's Day. I just realized, that means there's only two Nitros before the PPV. Not sure if there will be Thunders too.
Alex Wright vs The Cat (w/ Ms. Jones)
Pre-Match: Cat takes a random shot at the Nitro Girls as he criticizes Wright's dancing, then convinces Alex to dance some more as they play his music. Cat says he's rather see fat ass Madden dancing, then gets a fat ass chant going.
Alex misses a series of elbows as Cat slides in, then sent off the ropes into a back drop. Alex uses the ref as a shield before getting Cat with a clothesline and vicious stomps. Wright with a snap suplex for two. Cat with rights until he's poked in the eye, then sent out to the floor. Alex comes off the apron with a double sledge only to have water thrown in his face in midair. Chops by Alex, then misses a water bottle shot. European uppercuts then a front slam onto the announce table. Cat blocks another slam and retreats into the ring.
Throat shot by Cat, then caught with a side suplex, before being tossed back to the floor. Cat slammed back first into the ring post, then Alex blocks a roundhouse from Ms. Jones, only to get a kick to the chest from Cat. Cat sent to the guard rail before turning back to the ring. More rights rom Alex and an elbow to the back, followed by an armbar. Cat fights his way back to his feet and delivers a scoop slam, then a chop. Alex right back up with anther arm lock. Cat fights out again, off the ropes into a knee to the gut, then an elbow to the top of the head. Cat sent off the ropes into a high knee for two. Cat avoids a powerslam and sends Alex into the corner, connects with a roundhouse for the win. (5:54) A nothing match. Not bad, but not exactly good either.
Commercial
Limo arrives and out come the Thrillers.
Steiner is attacking the Jung Dragons backstage. Elix gets beaten down too for some reason.
Out come the Thrillers. Sanders says the crowd is proof that you can take Richmond out of the trailer park, but you can't take the trailer parks out of Richmond. He says they're the genetically jacked to ever step in the business, they're bigger, stronger, faster and a lot better looking than the jabronis in the back. He says they give the children heroes to look up to, the boyfriends and husbands an excuse to go to the gym, and the ladies a fantasy to go home to every Monday night. He calls Page and Nash artifacts and says they were cheated, robbed, and everyone knows it. Nash and Page aren't there tonight and since he's the commissioner, the Insiders will defend the titles at the PPV.
He's about to announce the #1 contenders but out comes Flair to interrupt. Flair gets some cheap pops and says he knocked down more women in '81 in Richmond than Sanders will in his whole life. He says there were 3,000 girls lined up for the Horsemen. Flair agrees with some of Sanders' claims but says Sanders is no comparison to Luger, and for all Sanders brings to the table, he's not capable or able to make matches. Perfect Event lost the titles, and though they're good and wrestle their asses, they're not getting a title shot automatically. So Flair makes a tag team battle royal for Thunder, pitting Perfect Event, Palumbo & O'Haire and six other teams against each other for a tag title shot.

Buff immediately retreats to the floor. Goldberg starts to follow him around the ring and at some point, Luger came out and he's hiding around the corner with a chair. Luger with a chair to the ribs and back and the ref calls for a DQ. (0:33) (32-0)

Winner faces Steiner and the mystery man for the World Title at Sin.
Pre-Match: Lance wants to be serious for a minute. He says it's one down and one to go, and he's on to Sin and his first World Title after tonight. He says as good as Jarrett is, he's not from Calgary. Then calls for the anthem until Jarrett interrupts.
Some quick back and forth to start until they get into a shoving match in the corner, then they both go for a cheap shot as the ref forces a break. Lance takes control with more rights before tossing Jarret to the floor, but misses a crossbody. Back in the ring. Jarrett applies a figure 4 right away. Storm's shoulders are down for a good 5 seconds before the referee actually start to count and Storm pops back up at two. Lance reverses the pressure until Jarrett gets the ropes.
Storm sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline, crucifix rollup for two. Small package from Storm, then Jarrett reverses it for two. Jarrett counters a suplex into a roll up for two. Storm with boots and a jawbreaker, followed by a dropkick for two. Storm with a scoop slam before going up top only to be crotched by Jarrett, who follows with a superplex. Jarrett drapes the arm over eventually for a near fall. Storm with rights, then sent off the ropes, catches a boot, ducks an enziguri and gets the Maple Leaf applied, but Jarrett quickly gets to the ropes for a break. Jarrett counters an Irish whip into the Stroke for the win. (4:44) Another excellent match. Too short and the ending was too abrupt though, but to be fair, there's only about two minutes left in the show.
Out comes Steiner with a mic, pipe and Midajah. He reminds Flair of his threat so he's going to go find him and shove the pipe up his ass. A referee is trying to stop him as Steiner goes to the back. Steiner has hold of Jimmy Hart too. Steiner sees Flair poking his head out of some doors at the end of the hallway and they exchange words, can't make any of it out. Then out comes...
That's literally the best shot we get of this guy, presumably our mystery man. He attacks Steiner until security separate them, Schiavone says he has a straightjacket on? It's hard to tell. But that's how the show ends.
Thunder
Flair is in his limo to run down the card:

WCW Cruiserweight Championship: Jamie Knoble vs Chavo Guerrero Jr. (c)
Pre-Match: Chavo gets a mic and says Helms has been on a roll, winning the ladder match, then beating his own partner to earn a title shot. He says though that if Knoble were to beat him tonight, he himself would become the #1 contender and Helms would be out of the picture.
Some quick back and forth with Noble getting the advantage following a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker into an STF, then La Magistral for two. Rollup for two, then Chavo sends him to the corner, floats over and headscissors Chavo to the floor. Noble sent off the ropes, through the legs, roll up for two. Noble fighting back only to be sent off the ropes but catches Chavo with a neckbreaker. Noble with some rights, then Chavo sent off the ropes into a dropkick, then again into a back drop and a clothesline. Chavo tries to beg him off but Noble stomps away and sets Chavo on the top rope. Out comes Helms to hold Noble's footo n the middle rope, allowing Chavo to knock him down. Chavo with the frog splash, then the brainbuster for the win. (5:01) Excellent opener.

- Bigelow is ready for Crowbar tonight
Jim Duggan makes his way out in street clothes, and no 2x4 in hand. He's not here to give excuses for his actions the last few months, being way over 21 years old, he made his bed and now he'll lie in it. He does want to explain what happened: three months ago the so-called wrestling experts told him he's done, and they were going to force him into retirement, forcing him out of who he was. After 20 years of sharing every big moment of his life, from fighting cancer, to the birth of his children, he shared everything with them because it's who he is. But he turned his back on his country, he sold his soul, traded his friends, fans and self-respect for one more day in the sun. He's here to apologize to several people, his dad, his wife and kids, and to the fans.
Commercial
Duggan is on his way out but is stopped by Awesome and wants him to reconsider, at least stick around until the end of the show, offering a ride home later. Duggan obliges.

Okerlund interviews the Thrillers about the battle royal.
Rection reconciles with Duggan backstage.
Tag Team Battle Royal: 3 Count, Jung Dragons (w/ Leia Meow), Kwee-Wee & Meng (w/ Paisley), Harris Twins, Jamie Noble & Evan Karagias, Filthy Animals (w/ Tygress), Perfect Event and Mark Jindrak & Sean O'Haire (w/ Mike Sanders & Reno)
Winners earn a Tag Title shot at Sin.
For some reason this match starts halfway through the entrances. No one's eliminated once the last team comes out so it's about as crowded. They explain that a team is eliminated once one member is thrown over the top to the floor, not both. Jung Dragons are casually eliminated, I can't even tell who did it, but Yang was thrown out to be eliminated. Noble and Karagias get eliminated by one of the Twins when Noble is tossed out. There's nothing to talk about here, it's a lot of nothing with anticlimactic eliminations so far. 3 count are both thrown out by Meng. Vito appears from nowhere to attack Reno, sending him in the guard rail and pummeling him with rights and lefts. Also, Johnny the Bull's back now and whacks Sanders with a kendo stick. Looks like the Mamalukes are back together.
Commercial
Meng, Kwee-Wee and the Harris Twins were eliminated during the break. Rey almost gets dumped by Perfect Event, it's just them, Jindrak and O'Haire left. It's four on one obviously. Rey nearly clotheslined out but manages to hang on. O'Haire with a side kick on Kidman. Kidman sent out to the apron and Palumbo eliminates him with a springboard dropkick.
Sanders enters the ring now though he can barely stand after the earlier attack. All four Thrillers are celebrating and Sanders calls for the bell? (9:15)
Referee is arguing with Sanders and they scare him to the back. Sanders says that once again the Thrillers are bigger, faster, stronger and a hell of a lot better looking than the idiots in the back. Sanders says they proved that the guys in the back don't have what it takes to be champions. He says that the #1 contenders could be any combination of two of Perfect Event, Jindrak and O'Haire, but we won't know who until Sin. Nine minute nothing match for a screwy finish, and what felt like an hour just to finally tell us what the hell is going on.

"Primetime" Elix Skipper vs Konnan (w/ Tygress)

Konnan sent off the ropes into a dropkick, then backdrops Elix to the apron. Elix with a headscissor and a spin kick for two. Elix with a missile dropkick from the top gets two.
Rear chinlcok by Elix, using the ropes for added leverage. Konnan fights his way out, comes off the ropes, misses a clothesline and gets caught with one for two. Elix with a hammerlock now, then snaps the arm before taking Konnan to the corner. Konnan sent to the corner, tries to float over but Elix has it scouted. Snapmare and a springboard leg drop by Elix for two.
Konnan sent to the corner, floats over successfully into a rollup with a bridge for two. Drop toe hold by Elix and La Magistral for two. Elix sent off the ropes, avoids a monkey flip with a rollup, Konnan counters with a rollup for two. Elix sent off the ropes into the rolling thunder clothesline. Tequila Sunrise gets the win. (6:34) Kind of a dull match here, even got a brief boring chant.

Crowbar (w/ Daffney) vs Bam Bam Bigelow
Pre-Match: Bigelow can barely move on his way to the ring, I guess he's selling the Ambulance Match.
Crowbar overpowered into the corner, then Bigelow with some shoulder blocks, sends Crowbar across for a splash. Crowbar with body shots only to be thrown across the ring. Crowbar with boots to the gut, only to eat a headbutt, Bigelow following with a stalling suplex, just to drop Crowbar instead of falling back. Crowbar with more body shots only to get sent off the ropes, but dropkicks the bad knee.
Crowbar targeting the bad knee, dropping his weight on it, followed by a chop block, only to be kicked out to the floor through the ropes. Bigelow pulled under the ropes to the floor and Crowbar with more kicks to the knee, plus a headbutt of his own. Crowbar sent into the guard rail and Bigelow's leg gives out. Bigelow with rights until Daffney rakes his eyes from behind. Bigelow limps after her and Crowbar gets him with another chop block off the distraction, followed by a baseball slide sends Bigelow into the guard rail. Crowbar with a running splash off the apron.
Back in the ring, Crowbar with a slingshot splash to the back. Bigelow is complaining to the ref about his knee as Crowbar goes up top, and out comes Meng, dropping Crowbar with headbutts. Greetings from Asbury Park gets the win. (4:28) Another bad match here. Not to mention having your title challenger lose to a guy who can't do anything is a horrible decision, even if it wasn't clean.

Rection clotheslines Clark to the floor, then delivers mounted punches to Franchise in the corner. Franchise sent across the ring, tries to get a boot up but gets caught. Powerslam and a top rope moonsault by Rection and a cover, but Clark makes the save. A-Wall takes him to the floor as Rection is sent off the ropes, hits a shoulder block. Adam nails A-Wall in the head with a chaor, then Rection in the back of the head with it as he's sent off the ropes. Franchiser on Rection gets the win. (5:20) Fine little match.
Adams delivers a piledriver to Cajun and Franchise nails Rection with his chain repeatedly.

Rection's getting checked by the trainer backstage.
Team Canada come out. Lance wants to be serious for a minute and to make an important announcement. First he wants to talk about the hypocritical nature of America, the indecisiveness of the country, says they still got it wrong after taking forever to decide their election. He says the man with the most votes lost, and bad decisions are typical of America and Duggan. He says Duggan sold his soul for time in the spotlight, changed allegiances at the drop of a hat, and now that he's realized he made a bad decision he ran home with his tail between his legs. He says the only good decision Duggan ever made was to walk away earlier, telling him good riddance.
Duggan comes back out with 2x4 in hand this time around and gets in Storm's face. Skipper gets behind him ready to attack and a loud USA chant starts as they back him into a corner, swinging his 2x4 around, Skipper swinging the Canadian flag. It could not be more obvious that Awesome is late on his cue, because Duggan gets a mic and is interrupted by Awesome mid-improvised promo. Then Awesome turns Canadian clotheslining Duggan from behind, and triple teaming ensues. Awesome takes off his 70s gear to reveal a maple leaf t-shirt.
